Ivan Ave's new album “Double Goodbyes” is finally here! A 36 minute long master piece boasting Ivan’s jazzy and soulful trademark sound, fresh for 2020. This one less electronic sounding than his previous solo efforts, heavily infused by the mid-eighties jazz-funk, AOR & yacht rock sounds. With a note of levity, equally influential were the aesthetics of daytime TV shopping and late 80s -early 90s new age. “It’s easy to mock, due to some of its pompous cheesiness” says Ivan. “But as I get older, experiencing life’s ups & downs, the essence of it feels genuine”. Seven out of eleven tracks on the album came to life in Ivan’s studio last summer together with guitarist Sasac, while others are the product of his link with musicians in Alabama, Melbourne and LA. “Double Goodbyes" seems to almost mark a break with his rap roots. But perhaps not. Ave’s dilemma surfaces in the song “Find Me pt. III”; “how many times do you say goodbye before it means hello?”. Although partly an affectionate goodbye to rap, this record also welcomes exciting, new directions, and establishes Ivan in a much broader musical universe. The album features top notch musicians such as Sasac, Byron The Aquarius, Mndsgn, Devin Morrison, Kiefer, Clever Austin (Hiatus Kaiyote), Joyce Wrice and more. When Ivan guested the podcast of legendary producer, songwriter and member of A Tribe Called Quest, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, described his music as “deeply therapeutic”. The same can be said for his latest offering, «Double Goodbyes».

The debut album from the legendary Brazilian group, Os Novos Bahianos. Official Mr Bongo reissue. Originally released by RGE in 1970 in Brazil, ‘É Ferro Na Boneca!’ features 13- songs composed by Luiz Galvão and Moraes Moreira. This record shows the roots of the group, moving through psychedelics, edgey pop, rock and Tropicália. After writing ‘É Ferro Na Boneca!’ their music began to move towards MPB due to the influence of João Gilberto, who began working with the group. In 1972 they released their incredible ‘Acabou Chorare’ LP, which came top of Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Brazilian Records (published in 2007).

Brazilian guitarist and singer Toquinho (real name Antônio Pecci Filho) was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in the 1940’s. His first major hit single was ‘Que Maravilha’, as featured here, that he wrote with Jorge Ben. This album also features ‘Zana’ and the ultra-famous ‘Carolina Carol Bela’, also written with Ben. Toquinho had a prolific career releasing a huge number of albums and writing on even more. He released many records with Vinicius De Moraes during the 70’s. ‘Carolina Carol Bela’ was sampled by DJ Marky on his drum n bass hit ‘LK’ – the track that launched the sound of Brazilian drum n bass outside of Brazil.

Seminal Japanese jazz album from 1971. Journeys through jazz fusion, soul and big band moods. Impossible to obtain in its original format these days. Official Mr Bongo reissue. Hozan Yamamoto was recognised as a "living national treasure" by the Japanese government in 2002. This highly sought-after album from the Japanese wood flute player is more upbeat and swinging than some of his other records. The big band he recorded this album with (Sharps & Flats) played a big part in the genesis of the album’s groove. Forming in 1951, they helped to make jazz popular in Japan after World War II. Yamamoto's flute lines weave over the heavy brass sound and groove, creating an MPS label blending of funky jazz and Japanese vibes. The closest comparison would be Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess / Cadet – substituting Yamamoto’s flute for the harp.

One of Ze’s finest albums in our opinion, originally released by Continental Brazil in 1976 – a tough one to find at a good price in its original form now. ‘Estudando do Samba’ (or ‘Studying The Samba’) is a post-Tropicalia studio experimentation laiden with layers of hypnotic percussion, effects & samples that deconstructs the ‘samba’ form. Recorded during what was arguably his most creative period. David Byrne found the record in Rio in the late 90’s and included several songs on his Tom Ze collection for Luaka Bop a few years later. At that time Tom was not recording or touring much; playing low-key shows in Sao Paulo and contemplating a move back to Irará to work at a service station owned by one of his cousins. Byrne’s project helped to reignite his career and he hasn’t looked back since.

In 1981, the Mexican government became very interested Luis Pérez Ixoneztli's work and sponsored the production of what became the first recording of the fusion of native mexican instruments with electronics – entitled ‘Ipan In Xiktli Metztli,’ in the Nahuatl language, or ‘En el Ombligo de la Luna’ in Spanish… ‘In the Navel of the Moon.’ The impact of this recording and subsequent performances among media, ethnomusicologists and audiences alike established Luis Perez ‘Ixoneztli’ as a precursor to a new musical genre followed by a generation of young Mexican musicians – Ethno-Rock, Ethno-Jazz, Ethno-Experimental and the like. ‘El Ombligo de la Luna’ reaches us from deep in the past but it also exists entirely outside of time, as Luis Pérez ‘Ixoneztli’’s offering to the world – the soul of Mexico channeled through the hands of a master musician.

"None A Jah Jah Children" collects the eight best tracks from the two longplayer "Rastafari" and "Kibir-Am-Lak" that Ras Michael & The Sons Of Negus made for producer Tommy Cowan in the 1970's, all tracks re-mastered by Kevin Metcalfe. This are nyah chants made sound system ready by the Talent Corporation with the heavyweight musical back-up of Robbie Shakespeare, Peter Tosh, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Robbie Lyn, Tommy McCook, Carlton "Santa" Davis and the Sons Of Negus with the all the various drums like the 1st, 2nd and 3rd funde, akete bass drum, repeater, bass funde and trap drums. The original recordings happened at Dynamic Sound and at Joe Gibbs studios. The LP-Vinyl includes also a nice printed inner sleeve with images and linernotes by Harry Wise and is released alongside the same titled remastered 2-CD-set with 22 tracks.
