A lost Danish rap classic finally sees the light of day
It’s a tale almost as old as breakbeats on the ones and twos: legendary rap album gets shelved due to label politics and A/R concerns over lacking radio-friendly singles. Unlike so many records with similar stories, this particular album, however, is Danish - and now, 30 years later, it will finally be released.
Unorthodox: The 1995 Tapes by rapper Youngblood (YB) and legendary producer trio The Prunes (Beastie Boys, Mo’ Wax) is a rarity in Danish hiphop: dark, uncompromising boom-bap that fits right in with classics like The Sun Rises in the East and Enta da Stage. A raw, relentless sound that once scared off the rapper’s former record label, but now is sure to find its way to a lot of new listeners far beyond its country of origin.
Unorthodox: The 1995 Tapes features 11 previously unreleased tracks and joins a series of recent discoveries from The Prunes’ archives. Released on CD via Rekords Records in 2026.

Ligesom i hiphoppens hjemland var midthalvfemserne en regulær guldalder for dansk hiphopkultur. Pladeselskabspolitik betød imidlertid at et af æraens absolutte hovedværker aldrig udkom, men i stedet forblev et af de største what if-øjeblikke i dansk hiphophistorie.
Nu er tiden kommet til at set the record straight, og fortælle historien om et af de bedste danske engelsksprogede rapalbums nogensinde: Unorthodox: the 1995 Tapes, af rapperen Youngblood aka YB i samarbejde med den legendariske producertrio The Prunes (Beastie Boys, Mo’ Wax, Gramsespektrum). Jeppe ‘Jay-B’ Bisgaard - måske den mest toneangivede figur i dansk hiphop nogensinde - agerede executive producer og manager.
Albummet er usædvanligt i dansk kontekst: det er mørk, kompromisløs boom-bap, der i både lyd og kvalitetsniveau passer perfekt ind på reolen ved siden af The Sun Rises in the East, Stress: The Extinction Agenda og Enta da Stage. Der bliver ikke lagt fingre imellem - hvilket i sin tid på fortvivlende vis også afskrækkede Youngbloods tidligere pladeselskab fra at udgive pladen.
Youngbloods historie stopper dog ikke her. Han vandt i 1993 en dansk Grammy for sit debutalbum - forløberen til Unorthodox - og har siden markeret sig som både rapper og producer langt ud over Danmarks grænser – fra Method Man-singlen Ya’ Meen til over 75 K-pop-udgivelser med grupper som EXO, Seventeen og Red Velvet.
Unorthodox: The 1995 Tapes består af 11 hidtil uudgivne numre og føjer sig til rækken af fund fra Prunesarkiverne. Udgivet på CD i 2026 på Rekords Records.
